The region of Cantabria is a pastoral and agricultural enclave which has preserved most of its natural beauty. Its principal feature is the marked contrast between sea and mountains. Santander has some of the best beaches in the country, ample parks, gardens, promenades, attractive shops and an excellent bus service. There are plenty of good restaurants, in keeping with northern Spain’s rich gastronomic tradition. In summer, the International University „Menendez Pelayo“ and the Music Festival make the city Spain’s intellectual and cultural capital.

There is a social organiser employed by the school to inform students about any free-time activities they may be interested in. The social organiser takes the students around the city once a week and accompanies them on weekend trips.

In addition to the areas of natural beauty, the region contains important artistic and architectural features, dating from prehistoric to modern times, like the Altamira caves, the Roman city of Julióbriga, the Mozarabic church of Santa Maria de Lebeña, Santillana del Mar (a medieval village designated as a national monument) and «El Capricho» (a famous building designed by Gaudi.
